So today I received a friendly forest package of forest treats and accoutrements from my friend Ariel Greenwood from The Forest. She is also on the Forestlings forum. These are some of the goodies she sent me. She also sent a photograph which I do not have here as it is already on her website. I believe I have also posted it on my blog as well. I will be sending her a response foresty care package, Girl Guides style, in trade off for the Girl Scouts patches I received. I can’t list the items here as they’re a suprise for her!

Another small craft. A small disc of wood from a found branch, a piece of leather twine,  potato, and some paint. I drilled two holes in the disc like you would a button and used a potato stamp to create the tree image. Then I tied an adjustable ring strap using leather twine and fisherman’s knots on either side.

So I just completed this little “walnut locket” from a tutorial from Foam via Honestly WTF. Honestly, theirs is a bit prettier than mine, but I’d thought I’d share it anyway. Essentially I had found the black walnut halves on the forest floor when I was out doing a bit of forest thrifting and decided to make a sylvan/woodsy charm necklace using this tutorial. I used an image of some pine trees from an issue of a hunting outfitter’s magazine and I used copper twine for the charm loop.   The main difference in what I did, because it was forest thrifted was that I had to clean the walnut shells. I soaked them for an hour in a mixture of peroxide and hot water. If you want to be really earthy about it, heat up water to a boil on the stove and add 3 tablespoons of honey. This will create natural hydrogen peroxide. I also used a dremmel as I don’t own a drill. I switched the chain at the end to a generic one purchased from etsy.

What You’ll Need: A walnut, drill with 2 drill bits, sharp kitchen knife, nail polish, and a necklace.

How to Make It: 1. Start with the walnut flat side down. Split the walnut down the middle with the knife. You are not cutting into the walnut shell, it is more of a smack, hitting down on knife to open the walnut.

2. Take the insides of the walnut out and flip it flat side down. With a small drill bit (1/16,) drill at an angle. Start by going slow and be patient, it takes a little while. Once the small hole is made take the larger drill bit (1/8) and enlarge your hole.

3. Next, use nail polish to paint the inside of your locket. Use clear coat polish to cover the outer shell and give it a nice shine. Insert a photo into the locket. The polish can work as the glue. ( We also used a small piece of double-sided tape.)

4. Thread a chain necklace or suede cord through the hole.”
